How to Keep Your Bedroom Mattress Fresh and Clean

11/11/2022

how-to-keep-your-bedroom-mattress-fresh-and-clean
Goodnight. We say this at the end of every day and then hop into bed. We have spent over 25% of our life sleeping. With that much of our life spent in bed, it makes sense that a clean, fresh, and comfortable mattress can go a long way toward mitigating stress and pressure and improving our health.

A good night's sleep starts with a good bed. Mattresses deserve proper care, just like our bodies and minds need great rest.
Did you ever clean your mattress? (I hope your answer is yes) If not, you are doing the dust mites a favor, letting them live and reproduce undisturbed. Mattresses accumulate dust mites and gather dust, skin oil, shed skin flakes, various bodily fluids, hair, and sweat. Added to that are indoor pollution, pet dander, and allergens. Your mattress is RIPE for a cleaning.

Carpet and upholstery cleaners in Worcester, MA, are here to give you the best tips on how to keep your bedroom mattress fresh and clean. So if you are ready to achieve a far more enjoyable and good night's sleep, apply and follow these tips.

Note: You should clean your mattress every six months at least. However, we recommend doing it each season.

Mattress Care: Ways to Keep Your Mattress in Fresh and Clean

General Cleaning and Odor Removal
  1. Remove all the bedding from your mattress and toss it into the washing machine while you work.
  2. Start vacuuming the top of your mattress, the sides, and underneath the bed. Then, lift the mattress (ask someone to help if it’s pretty heavy) and vacuum between the box springs and the mattress.
  3. Mix a cup of baking soda with a few drops of essential lavender oil. Eventually, place the mixture in a strainer.
  4. Evenly shake the fragranced baking soda over the entire mattress.
  5. Leave the baking soda on the mattress until the linen is washed and dried.
  6. Lastly, vacuum the baking soda off the mattress and remake your bed with clean linens.

Natural Cleaning Solutions for Various Stains and Spots

Vomit
Children all seem to vomit in bed at one time or another. Use a mix of a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar and place it in a spray bottle. Spray the spotted area of the mattress and blot it with a clean towel. Repeat spraying and blotting until the mark is gone. Then, sprinkle a little bit of baking soda over the treated area. Vacuum away the baking soda after an hour. Let the mattress air dry.

Urine and Sweat
Mix 1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide, three tablespoons of baking soda, and just a few drops of liquid dishwashing soap. Then, Stir until the baking soda dissolves. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle, then spray the entire stained area of the mattress, allowing the solution to soak into the mark. Lastly, leave the solution to air dry for at least an hour. To speed things up, you use a blowing fan near the mattress or a blow dryer on the cool setting.

Blood
Use 3% of hydrogen peroxide and spray the bloodstain. Use a clean towel to blot. Just repeat spraying and blotting the stain until it is gone. Dry the mattress by using a blow dryer.

“Bonus Tips”

*Other ways to take care of your mattress properly
  • Make it a habit to rotate your mattress top to bottom at least every other month. This will delay the inevitable form of valleys and sags due to body weight.
  • Nowadays, many mattress pads are far more comfortable and breathable, and many are thickly padded for extra comfort and are dust-mite resistant. Use a mattress pad against its mortal enemies: body oils, dust mites, moisture, and skin flakes.
  • Never jump on the bed. Wooden supports might break, sending the mattress and you to the floor.
  • A dust ruffle will add protection to the underside of your mattress. At least once a year, wash the bed skirt to remove accumulated dust and hair.
  • Don’t let your pets sleep underneath your bed. Letting pets sleep underneath your bed means lots of pet fur along the bottom of your mattress and an increased likelihood of a sniffly nose for you. Likewise, your pet might rip through the thin fabric protecting the bottom of the foundation. So it’s best to give your pet a cozy bed of its own. Both of you will have a good sleep.
  • Periodically exposing your mattress to fresh air and sunlight will help keep your mattress odor-free and dust mites. So let your mattress air out for a few hours after off all the bedding when it’s laundry time.

The mattress seems like a magnet for allergens and dust, so do your best, love your mattress and keep your bedroom as tidy as can be.
